Samba Background Dancers!

Find out what it's like to be on a ballroom dance team and join Olympic Ballroom Dance on stage at the Olympia Dance Festival on March 2 at the Washington Center for Performing Arts!!

TWELVE applicants will be selected! Submit your form today! Read below for all the details.

"Let Me Take You to Rio..."

Our Youth Silver Performance Team is presenting a Samba piece with the theme of "Rio Carnival" and we are looking for background dancers to fill in a parade scene for the last minute of our routine. Participants will dance a short section of easy & simple choreography (about 40 seconds), and then spend the rest of their stage time "acting" by doing things such as bouncing to the rhythm, running with ribbon sticks, waving to the audience, or otherwise acting out the motions of "walking in a parade."

Participants should be between 12 and 18 years of age, and ideally should have some dance or stage experience, but not required. Participants must exhibit good & respectful behavior at all times, be able to listen to and follow directions, and attend rehearsals as required.

The tuition cost to participate is $25 per dancer, which helps to cover costs associated with costumes, instruction, and other show costs. Current OBD Bronze team members may participate at NO extra tuition cost.

Other costs include obtaining dancewear that goes with your provided costume, including dance shoes. These items are the dancer's responsibility to provide and must be ready by dress rehearsal. Here is what's required:

  • FOR GIRLS: black short sleeve leotard (nylon/spandex material only; not cotton!), tan dance tights, tan jazz shoes.

  • FOR BOYS: black dress pants (no jeans material/style, no belts), black crew length socks, black jazz shoes.

Girls will be provided with fringe pants & a sequin shirt; boys will be provided with a satin button-down dress shirt. ALL COMPANY PROVIDED COSTUMES REMAIN THE PROPERTY OF OLYMPIC BALLROOM DANCE.

Rehearsals

Background dancers have TWO different options for choreography rehearsal:

  • THURSDAYS Feb 15 & 22, from 5 to 6 pm at the South Bay Grange (3918 Sleater Kinney Rd NE, Olympia).

OR

  • SATURDAYS Feb 10 & 24, from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm at Debbie's Dance (6715 Martin Way E, Olympia).

ALL dancers must attend the following rehearsals (they are MANDATORY meaning dancers cannot perform if they do not attend these):

  • DRESS REHEARSAL: Monday February 26 from 6:15 to 8 pm at the South Bay Grange.

  • TECH REHEARSAL: Thursday February 29 (time not assigned yet) at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (512 Washington St SE, Olympia).
